What a wet wet December it has been for my camera. Yes, we do take care of our equipment. We don't bash it around on purpose. But sometimes we just can't avoid it. When you want a great picture, go nearer.
Water on the camera, no problem. Soap on the camera, nothing serious. Mud on the camera, a quick rinse under running water will do. Or use a toothbrush to scrub the mud away.
The weak link in the whole gear is actually the ultra-violet filter that is attached to the front of the lens. If any water gets into the cracks of the filter, the inside will surely fog up. Needless to say, you can keep that lens in your bag for the rest of the day.
So should you get a weather-proof camera? Definitely!
