The iconic chilli crab was his favourite Singapore dish – and Michelin-starred chef Gordon Ramsay managed to beat popular Jumbo Seafood Restaurant at it.

The celebrity chef, who had fallen “in love” with the spicy dish from previous visits, eventually won by a narrow 5 per cent at the SingTel Hawker Heroes Challenge last night.

His adoring fans were out in full force at Newton Market last night – pandemonium broke out whenever they caught a glimpse of the reality TV star.

Most were locals, and surprisingly, many were young, like 17-year-old Vanessa Chia and her 21-year-old sister Valerie, who were the first in line.

The girls had been there since 1am on Sunday, and spent the night watching Ramsay’s shows on their laptops and mobile phones.

One thousand platters of food, served on a first-come-first-served basis, was distributed at 6.30pm. The last platter was served at about 9pm. Each platter had food prepared by Ramsay and the three hawkers.
