The prestigious Juilliard School in New York, US, has admitted its first dance student from Singapore, 19-year-old Michelle Lim.

Last year, the performing arts conservatory admitted only one in 14 applicants across all its divisions. Miss Lim was accepted last month into its four-year undergraduate programme in its dance division.

Singapore Dance Theatre artistic director Janek Schergen said: “Those admitted (into Juilliard) are chosen for their unique movement qualities as well as their dance technique.”

In February, Miss Lim flew to New York to audition before members of the school’s faculty and administration. She underwent four nerve-racking rounds of auditions, where hopefuls were eliminated after each round.

“There were 50 dancers from all over the world in my group. But after the first round – which was on ballet – 35 got eliminated,” she said.
